  • Husky Safari 20 km Self-Drive in Levi — Your Own Dog Team Through Forest, Fell and Frozen Lakes

Why this is one of the best husky safaris near Levi

    • 20 km — the longest self-drive husky safari in the program, covering forest, open fell and frozen water
    • Each guest drives their own team of 4-6 Alaskan huskies for the full route
    • Two specialist kennels: Maglelin Experience (near Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park) or All Huskies — both run by professional sport mushers
    • Small groups only — personal, unhurried experience at both kennels
    • Dog welfare first: both kennels are run by mushers who live alongside their dogs
    • Warm clothing provided — nothing to arrange separately

    The kennels

This program is operated by one of two small, specialist kennels near Levi, depending on availability at the time of booking: Maglelin Experience or All Huskies. The specific kennel is confirmed at booking.

Maglelin Experience is located 25 km north of Levi, near Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and Lake Pallasjärvi. The 20 km route skirts the edge of the National Park, taking guests through forest, open fell terrain, and across frozen lakes and streams.

All Huskies is located approximately 30 minutes from Levi, with routes through a mix of forest and open terrain.

Both kennels are run by professional sport mushers who live alongside their dogs, keep groups deliberately small, and put dog welfare at the centre of how they work.

20 km through Lappish forest, fell and frozen lakes

Twenty kilometres is a proper commitment. The ride takes 1.5–2 hours on the sled, with the landscape changing as the group moves further from the kennel. Forest paths give way to open fell, the dogs settle into their pace, and the only sounds are the runners and the team running ahead. The musher or guide stays with the group throughout, giving instructions and support at any stops along the way.

At the kennel — dogs, warm hut and hot drinks

Back at the kennel, the dogs are unharnessed and there is time to spend with them before moving inside. A warm hut or kota, hot drink, snacks, and conversation about the dogs and the kennel's life. Remove gloves before touching the dogs — they will play with them. Do not feed the dogs.

    Who this is for

    • Adults and older children who want the full self-drive husky experience — not a passenger ride
    • Those who want to cover real distance and feel what mushing actually demands
    • Guests who want a small-group, specialist kennel experience over a large commercial operation
    • Anyone willing to commit to a physically demanding half-day in the Arctic wilderness

    Private Option

Twenty kilometres with your own dog team on private wilderness trails — Maglelin Experience and All Huskies both run private bookings for this route. Contact us to discuss availability and arrange.

    Important remarks

    F.A.Q.

    • Can anyone drive a husky sled on this safari?

Each guest drives their own team for the full 20 km. No prior experience is needed — a full briefing and mushing instruction is given before departure. The ride is physically demanding and lasts 1.5–2 hours in cold outdoor conditions. Normal physical condition and reasonable fitness are required.

    • Which kennel will I be at — Maglelin Experience or All Huskies?

The specific kennel is confirmed at the time of booking, depending on availability. Both are run by professional sport mushers with small groups and a strong focus on dog welfare. The route and experience are comparable in quality at both kennels.

    • What is the difference between the 5 km, 10 km and 20 km husky safaris?

All three are self-drive with your own dog team. The 5 km and 10 km safaris operate from Tepasto kennel near Levi. The 20 km is operated by Maglelin Experience or All Huskies and covers significantly more distance and terrain — including open fell and frozen water. It is the most immersive and physically demanding option.

    • What should I wear?

Warm outerwear is provided at the kennel. Wear thermal base layers and woollen socks underneath. Ski goggles are recommended for eye protection on the trail. The ride is 1.5-2 hours in exposed outdoor conditions.
