    • Guide reads the winter landscape: animal tracks, Arctic nature, how wildlife survives the cold
    • Hot berry juice stop in the forest halfway through

    • Warm winter clothing available to rent at Safarimarket, just minutes away

Snowshoe trail through Levi’s winter forest

Snowshoes distribute your weight across the snow so you walk on top of it rather than through it. That is the whole principle, and it takes about five minutes to get used to. The guide meets the group in Levi village centre, fits everyone with snowshoes adjusted to their boot size, and walks a short distance to the trailhead at the base of Levi fell.

The route is a 2-4 km loop — the exact path chosen on the day based on snow conditions and the group’s pace. The trail winds through snow-covered woodland and across small frozen lakes. In the forest, the silence is the first thing you notice: no traffic, no lifts, no voices. Just the soft crunch of snowshoes underfoot and, occasionally, a breath of wind through the trees.

The guide reads the landscape as you go — pointing out animal tracks pressed into the snow, explaining how hares turn white in winter, where willow grouse shelter in deep frost, how the reindeer find lichen beneath the surface. Midway through the route, the group stops in the forest for hot berry juice. Steaming in the cold air. The kind of simple thing that feels good after an hour in the winter woods.

The tour finishes back in Levi village. No transport is used at any point — everything happens on foot from the centre and back.

Snowshoeing is accessible but not effortless: the terrain is uneven and the cold is real. Sturdy, warm winter boots are essential. Not recommended for guests with serious mobility limitations.

    Important remarks

    F.A.Q.

    • Is snowshoeing in Levi suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. This is the easiest snowshoeing tour we offer. No prior experience is needed — the guide adjusts snowshoes to your boot size and the pace is set by the group. The effort is comparable to cycling approximately 5 km.

    • Do I need to bring my own snowshoes or poles?

No. Snowshoes and poles are provided and included in the price. Wear your own sturdy, warm winter boots — snowshoes are fitted over them.

    • What is the difference between this tour and the Wilderness Snowshoeing tour?

The Easy tour starts and ends in Levi village with no transport — it is a 2-hour loop on relatively flat terrain. The Wilderness tour involves a 10-minute transfer, a short uphill climb to a viewpoint, and ends at a private hut with a campfire stop. Both are available from age 12.

    • What is the light like in December on this tour?

In December, daylight in Levi lasts roughly from 10:00 to 14:00. Tours departing in this window run in natural light. Later departures enter kaamos — the soft, luminous blue Arctic light of the polar night period — which gives the snow-covered forest a quality of light unlike anything in ordinary daylight.

    Important remarks:

Transport: None. Tour starts and ends in Levi village centre.

Children's snowshoes: We do not have children's snowshoe sizes below EU 36. The minimum age of 12 is set accordingly — please contact us in advance if you are unsure about shoe size.

Equipment: Snowshoes and poles provided. Wear your own sturdy, warm winter boots.

Clothing: Warm winter clothing not provided. Available to rent at Safarimarket, Keskuskuja 2 B 3. Rental: €12.

Arrival: Arrive at least 20 minutes early if renting clothing.

    Recommendation

    • Wear warm, layered clothing and sturdy insulated boots.
    • Two pairs of socks recommended.
    • The tour involves 2 hours of walking in cold outdoor conditions.
