Snowshoeing to Secret Reindeer Forest — Herder’s Day with Lunch (Levi)
A 4-hour two-part program combining a private-land snowshoe hike with a full Reindeer Herder’s Day and soup kota lunch, operating Dec–Mar with a late morning departure. Ages 12+. Moderate level. Warm winter clothing included. Group size: maximum 10 people, two visits per day.
Part 1: 2–4 km guided snowshoe hike from the transfer point (10 minutes from Levi) through snowy forest and frozen swampland, entirely on private land. No public trails, no other visitors. Return hike after the reindeer visit is approximately 15 minutes.
Part 2: The trail arrives at the Secret Reindeer Forest — a privately owned old pine and birch forest belonging to Jussi’s reindeer herding family. The herd of semi-wild reindeer lives freely in the wilderness for most of the year and is brought here in winter for feeding and care. Guests feed the herd at several natural spots in the forest with hay and pellets as the herder covers the family’s reindeer husbandry traditions across generations.
Kota lunch by open fire: Northern Light Veloute (signature vegetable soup) served with rieska flatbread, then self-grilled reindeer sausage, then Finnish pancakes with arctic berry jam and whipped cream. Coffee, hot berry juice, herbal tea. Lasso throwing practice and a personal diploma of Reindeer Herder’s Assistant included before the return hike.
Children — important: Recommended for ages 10 and above (snowshoe minimum EU 36 sets the formal minimum at 12). Reindeer roam freely around the group and are semi-wild — they may be startled by sudden movements, loud noises or close approach and may run, potentially striking a person. Parents must maintain constant supervision throughout the reindeer visit. STG and the reindeer farm are not liable for accidents involving reindeer during the program.
