Why choose this evening snowshoe tour in Levi

    • Evening fell descent in complete Arctic darkness, a genuinely different experience from any daytime tour
    • Position above village lights, among the better spots near Levi for northern lights viewing
    • Even without aurora: moonlit snow, stars, the silence of the dark forest
    • Available December to March

Snowshoe Fitting & Flexible Starting Point

Your guide will meet you in Levi and help you prepare with snowshoes, adjusted to your size and worn over your own sturdy winter boots. From there, we’ll continue to the chosen trailhead, either by a short transfer or directly from your accommodation.

The most popular route starts with a 5-minute drive to the summit of Levi Fell, where open views make it one of the better aurora-watching locations in the area. For a quieter or more sheltered hike, we can also explore a smaller fell in the surroundings of Levi, still scenic, with fewer visitors and a more intimate atmosphere.

Guided Snowshoeing Under the Arctic Sky

Depending on the selected route, we’ll cover about 2–4 km, either descending gently toward the village or following a scenic loop in nature. Some sections may be steeper, and your guide will adjust the pace according to your fitness and comfort level.

If the sky is clear, you may see stars, moonlight and, with some luck, the Northern Lights above you. Aurora sightings are never guaranteed, but being outside on a high, open route gives you a better position for watching the northern sky.

Even on snowy or overcast nights, the experience has its own magic: quiet forest, fresh snow and the soft glow of your headlamp creating a calm, immersive Arctic atmosphere.

    Hot Drink in the Wilderness

At a quiet moment during the hike, we’ll pause outdoors for a cup of steaming Finnish berry juice. While you enjoy your drink, your guide will share stories about Arctic wildlife, northern traditions and the seasonal rhythm of life in Lapland.

    Who this is for

    • Adults and older children (12+) comfortable walking in darkness
    • Those who want to experience Lapland at night without a snowmobile
    • Guests who prefer an active experience over a static observation point

    Important remarks

    F.A.Q.

    • Can you see the northern lights on the Night Snowshoeing tour?

Possibly. The tour stops at a viewpoint on the fell above the village lights — one of the better positions near Levi for aurora viewing. The northern lights depend on solar activity, clear skies and luck and cannot be guaranteed. On clear nights without aurora, the stars and moonlit snow are reason enough to be outside.

    • Do I need my own head torch?

It is useful but not essential. Guides carry lighting and lead the descent. A small personal head torch improves your own footing and is recommended.

    • What is the difference between Night Snowshoeing and Arctic Night Snowmobile tour?

Night Snowshoeing is an active descent on foot — 2-4 km of walking in darkness, ending in Levi village. The snowmobile tour cover more distance and include a stop on a frozen swamp with open sky. Snowshoeing is quieter and more physical; snowmobiling is faster and covers more ground. Both offer good aurora viewing positions.

    Important remarks:

Level: Moderate. Continuous downhill descent on uneven terrain. Not recommended for guests with knee problems, heart conditions or mobility issues.

Children's snowshoes: We do not have children's snowshoe sizes below EU 36. The minimum age of 12 is set accordingly — please contact us in advance if you are unsure about shoe size.

Northern lights: Cannot be guaranteed. Dependent on solar activity and cloud cover on the night.

Return transport: Not needed. Hike ends in Levi village centre.

Clothing: Warm winter clothing not provided. Available to rent at Safarimarket only. Rental: €12.

Arrival: Arrive at least 20 minutes early if renting clothing.

    Recommendation

    • Wear warm, layered clothing and sturdy insulated boots.
    • In temperatures below -20°C, face protection is recommended.
    •  A good head torch is useful but not essential — guides carry lighting.
    • Clothing rented from Safarimarket in Levi centre.
