Snow Igloo — Build Your Own, winter survival masterclass, Levi
A 3-hour hands-on program operating Dec 10 – Mar 10, in which participants build a real quinzhee snow shelter from scratch under the guidance of a professional outdoor guide. A quinzhee is built by piling and compacting snow into a mound, then hollowing it out from inside — the method used for emergency snow shelters in Arctic survival. The program takes place outdoors in Arctic conditions and can run in nearly any winter weather.
The site is in Lappish nature, either on the river bank or a frozen lake. Participants are dressed in thermal overalls, boots and mittens on arrival. The guide introduces the quinzhee method, leads the group through the full construction sequence — piling, compacting, digging the entrance tunnel, hollowing the interior, smoothing with a snow saw — and covers practical Arctic survival knowledge throughout. Some igloos built on this program contribute to the Snow Igloo Park at Polarman’s Camp; participants may have their names and home country marked on the igloo post. The program closes at an outdoor fire with warm drinks and snacks.
